A "burl" is a tree growth that grows in a deformed manner. It is highly dense and resists well to cracking and splitting and has the most gorgeous movement of swirls and knots in the grain. I find that when furniture makers lacquer over the burl, it creates the most gorgeous glow in the wood and really brings the piece into the modern era.
